College is an Option
The American economy is rapidly moving from being a manufacturing economy to a knowledge based economy. Much of the manufacturing activity in the country is being outsourced to third world countries where labor is cheap and affordable. The job market in the country is hungry for youngsters who can deal with an interconnected, global economy. They need people who can harvest information from a number of sources and provide the organization with the knowledge required. College education is no longer an option. It is a necessity. The butcher, the baker and candlestick maker have their place in the economy, but it is the College educated youngster who has the meat, the cake and the candle in the new emerging economy. The knowledge based economy demands higher levels of education and the future trends are in the direction of even higher levels of education.
Revolutionary technologies are sweeping away old methods of working. The rapid and kaleidoscopic nature of change demands that people should be able to adapt to these changes and hit the ground running. They should be quick to grasp and quicker to implement the latest trends in the market so as to meet the competition on their own terms. School education may make a person street smart, but it cannot give him the advantage of a college education in meeting the demands of the age he lives in. Today most employers consider a college degree a must for an employee. They also feel that a college degree empowers an individual. It makes him capable of learning quickly and grasping the intricacies of any issue easily.
College education creates a socially stable intellectual community. The creation of intellectually skilled workers is essential for the prosperity of the country. Scientific discoveries and progress is only possible in a society that has a large number of intellectuals. Well informed citizenry also form the backbone of democracy. Such a society can deal with complex social issues and ensure that enlightened policy decisions are made in all walks of life.
The growing interdependence of the globe also underlines the need for intellectual development of the populace. The ease of travel, telecommunications and the globalization of the economy will gradually increase the competition from other nations. More and more jobs would be outsourced to nations which have the necessary intellectual capacity to contribute to the organizations growth. Without college education, no nation can compete in the world market for jobs that demand the availability of knowledge workers.
The increasing interconnectedness of the world also has brought into the forefront global issues, like environmental pollution and nuclear proliferation which require world wide consensus and informed participation. Collective action demands that a nation fields informed individuals for discussion and resolution.
Preparation is half the battle. Learning about the world around us, helps us grasp the fundamental aspects of civilization and the evolution of thought through the ages. The past, the present and the future appear as a continuum of development. Education brings with it an understanding of the fundamental human condition and provides us with tools for making learning a life long experience.
Bill Gates said "training the workforce of tomorrow with the high schools of today is like trying to teach kids about today's computers on a 50-year-old mainframe. It's the wrong tool for the times." As he pointed out that this is not a flaw in the system it is a flawed system that promotes the concept that college education is an option. College education is the key component of fulfilling life's mission, and the best way to keep the most creative and intrepid thinkers interested and alert in life.
Every Government recognizes the need for the development of an educated and enlightened society, the strengthening of its democracy and the creation of a workforce capable of meeting the socio-economic and political needs of the nation. Though schools prepare the student in meeting the demands of life and creates in him a capacity to earn a living, it is college which nurtures his intellect and develops his vision and understanding. College education is no longer an option. It is the wrap and woof of the nation's growth and the essence of its capacity to forge ahead into the next century. Without intellectuals the nation will soon become dependent on its neighbors for its share in the intellectual wealth of the world. It needs to ensure that everyone has an access to college education, if it must survive in this Darwinian world.
