Newbery Medal, Children's Literature Standard by elainebs63
"You can't Judge a Book by it Cover"
We've all heard that many times, and it's true enough
until you see a book that sports the Newbery Medal on the cover.
That judgement is easy to make, your good sense quickly
tells you "That's a good book!" Why?
Who was John Newbery? What is the Newbery Medal?
Who gives these medals out and why?
Continue reading, and discover the answers to those
questions, and more.
1713--67 - John Newbery, an 18th century English bookseller,
was the first to establish children's literature as an important
part of the publishing world. While he was prolific, and published
his own works anonymously, he is credited with many more
worthwhile books.
In 1921 the American Library Association created the Medal in
Newbery's name, and has offered it as incentive for excellence
in American children's literature, and to instill the drive for
creative processes with good writing.
One bronze winning medal is awarded each year. An indefinite
number of silver honorable medals are awarded yearly as well.
The author has to be an American, and the book has to be
published in English.
The judges consist of librarians from all over the United States.
These are librarians from school libraries and public libraries.
They have first hand knowledge of how children experience and
enjoy each book.
So the next time you pickup a book that has the Newbery Bronze Award
or Silver Medal, you can know that this title was hand picked by
experts in children's literature. Enjoy!
