Save £££££££ on your energy bills - Top 5 tips by Nick Burke1. Don't overfill the kettle When you are making a drink only use the amount of water you actually need. Generally you'll waste 1 kilowatt per 10 ml overfilled. As you can see if you were to use the kettle 5 times a day and overfill it by 500ml each time, then over a course of a year you will unnecessarily waste nearly 100,000 kilowatts (100 million watts) of energy. 2. Don't leave electrical appliances on standby When you have finished using your TV, radio or computer monitor make sure you turn them off, don't leave them on standby. They will still be using valuable energy in the meantime, not too mention adding to the ware and tear on the appliance. 3. Don't use the hob to boil water When making pasta or boiled eggs or anything else which requires you to boil water before you add the food item which is to be cooked; use the kettle to boil it. The kettle is a lot more efficient way of boiling water, the hob will use up too much energy which will cost you money. 4. Turn the thermostat down Some people leave their thermostats on the same setting all the time even when they are not at home. The average person spends 9 hours out of the house a day or 3000 hours per year. It is recommended that during this time you should switch it down as much as 18 degrees Celsius. If you did this every time you were out of the house you'd save roughly 7.5% on your monthly fuel bill. 5. Compare prices If you were buying a car or a house you would check the prices to see which was the best deal for you. Why not do the same for your electricity and gas supplier? There are many websites out there where you can calculate the best deal for yourself. People have been known to save up to £300 per year on there energy bill, just think you can put this towards a holiday or just treat yourself.
