The title name says it all. If you think for one moment that being a burglar requires a lot of brains-think again. Burglars are opportunists-they respond and act on the laziness and stupidity of the homeowners. I don't mean to sound cruel but...let's be honest-most burglaries are executed by taking advantage of homeowner mistakes.

Let's discuss the BIGGEST MISTAKES

* THE WELCOME SIGN That's what I call it. DO NOT put out the welcome mat. Advertise clearly in no uncertain terms that your home is not going to be on their "to do" list today or ever. Start with some signage that you have a security system.

Some dummy surveillance cameras do wonders. Trim trees and bushes so there are no hiding places. Believe it or not when someone is casing your neighborhood for the easiest homes to rob, some really stand out as being the easiest. Make sure it is not yours!

* THE HIDDEN KEY TRICK The oldest joke in the book. Leaving an extra key under the mat, under a rock, wherever. The bad guys know all this folks!!

* THE GARAGE DOOR I just don't get this one. Why do people leave their garage door open two feet? No it is not a trick question. Do you think for one minute that burglars don't see stuff like that? Sure it is HOT outside-better that than to have someone fencing your HOT property.

* NO COMMON SENSE Just use a little common sense. Are ladders lying around that the bad guys can use to get to the second floor? Are doors and windows open? If you are away on vacation, does the home have a lived in look?

Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way crime has touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself, family, home, or business from the ravages of crime. That is the first step.
