Good Parenting Includes A Last Will And Testament   by Stephen Best

The basis and foundation of being a good parent is loving our children. We show and express that love in several ways such as planning for our children's future, taking care of our children, and providing the necessities of life for our children.

It is not always easy to do these things for our children, even when we are living in the same home. But what if the unthinkable happens? What if you die suddenly in an auto accident? What if your Husband or Wife and you die suddenly in the same accident? What happens to your children? Who will take care of them? Who will see that your children go to school and have proper medical care? If you leave your children money, who will make sure that the money is used wisely for your children?

There are two possibilities:

1. You do not have a Last Will And Testament. In this case, a Judge (most likely someone that does not know you, your family, or your likes and dislikes) will decide the fate of your children. The Judge will decide who will raise your children. Also, your state's laws will say who gets your property and, if your property goes to your children, when the property will be given to your children.

2. You have a Last Will And Testament. In this case, you, not a stranger, say who will have custody of your children, who will make decisions concerning their education, and who will see that your children receive proper care. Also, you say what property is to pass to your children, how the property is to be used for them, and when they are to receive the property. Simply stated, you say who will raise your children if you are not there because of your untimely death.

Without a Last Will And Testament, a Judge will first look to family members to take care of your children. We all have relatives that we do not trust to take care of our children or any property which may pass to our children. We all also have family or friends that we do trust. We know that they will raise our children in the right way and that they will take care of any property that may pass to our children. Good parenting requires us to name the person(s) whom we trust to do the right thing for our children. And the only way to name the person(s) you trust is to name him or her in your Last Will And Testament. Obviously, after your death, it is too late to name anyone.

Don't wait. For your children's benefit, don't put off making a Last Will And Testament. It is said that we are not promised tomorrow. The truth is that we are not promised the next moment.
