Eating Dirt by Brooke SchumanWhile my son was playing outside with the neighbor kids, and me right beside him talking to a neighbor, I look down and see my son put dirt in his mouth. ICKY!!! I said and we went inside to wash out his little mouth. I was freaking out, just like any normal new mother would do. But nothing bad happened. He just ate dirt. I'm sure he is not the first little guy to eat dirt, or there wouldn't be that saying "God made dirt so dirt don't hurt." The point to my little story is that babies are curious by nature and will put anything they can get there hands on in there little mouths, from dirt to small objects found on the ground. My son even ate some toilet paper one time. Not that I wasn't watching him, I was, its just that crawling babies are fast. Walking babies even faster. While dirt may not hurt your little one things like house hold cleaners, shampoo, makeup, deodorant, can. They can all be very dangerous for your little one to ingest. So do a couple things to keep your baby safe. Put all of these dangerous items out of babies reach, close bathroom doors and doors to the laundry room or other rooms that have chemicals and other house hold items. Put vitamins and other medications out of your babies reach as well. Watch your baby closely and when you can't put baby in a play pen close to you. Last but not least know your poison control number just in case of a accidental ingestion and get to a hospital right away. Better safe than sorry.
