Learn French by I. Renner So you want to learn French? And in a short period of time? Perhaps, like me, you are anticipating a trip to Paris and really want to learn at least some rudimentary French words and phrases so you can get by on your trip. A few months ago my husband and I had a long holiday weekend, with no children in the house. We decided to go to Paris for a few days. My French, however, was tucked away in my memory somewhere, having not taken a French language class since college (quite a few years ago!). I picked up my old French language book, but really didn't get into it, as I was not hearing the words spoken. Boy, was it boring! Then I decided to get an audio course on French. What a difference! I listened to the tapes every day, while I was driving, while I did housework, while I exercised. If I was alone I would practice saying the words out loud. After a couple of weeks, I was very tuned to hearing the French language spoken, and had picked up on enough French words and phrases to help out on our trip. Although learning a new language takes much longer than two weeks, I certainly felt more confident knowing some basic French words and phrases! My suggestions for anyone wanting to learn French: 1. If you want to learn quickly, get an audio course. A lower cost alternative to Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone is Rocket French. You get an unbelievable amount of quality training aids. You can get from beginner level to advanced within three months! 2. Play the MP3 files on your player while you do mundane activities such as driving, doing housework, and going to the gym. It makes the time go quickly, and you get very comfortable with the spoken French language. 3. Review the written words too, and ensure you take a pocket guide with you if you go on a trip before you complete the course. By the way did I mention we had a great time?
